Advert from 1950 attracting school leavers to work at G. E. C. |
The expectations for working life for boys and girls was very different in the 1950s. Children left school at 14 and many of the boys entered apprenticeships in the local industries; girls would also apply to the same industries, but were expected to work in the offices or do light manual work.
What are your memories of leaving school at 14 and starting work?
What was it like for the boys?
What about the girls?
